There are two lasting gifts of promise that we give our children. One is
roots (a knowledge of belonging) and the other is wings (a recognition of the
need for autonomy). A healthy family with well-functioning parents who love and nurture their
children provides a secure environment for growth and learning. There is a sense
of "we-ness" and belonging on the part of each member. A child who feels a deep
sense of belonging to their family believes that nothing will disrupt this
connection.
There are fair limits that are understandable and discussable. There are
boundaries that protect members and boundaries that expand to let in new members
and new information. There is a sense of loyalty that is strong and does not
impede one from developing into a person with individual ideas, dreams, and
behaviour.
Humour in a family improves its general health and well-being. There is no
question that the way a family functions will define, to a large measure, how
well a child will develop. Together, roots and wings are what children need from their family to become
productive, well-functioning and happy adults.
As
such, life is a series of interconnected choices and consequences. We
are who we are today because of the decisions that we made yesterday -
we are the sum of our choices. In our family, we fervently believe
that roots and wings provide the catalyst to wise decision making,
creating a legacy of promise...
